A Day at Split Rock Farm in Washington Depot, CT: A Journey Through History and Harvest
Nestled in the picturesque hills of Washington Depot, Connecticut, Split Rock Farm is a working farm lovingly maintained by long-time Wilton residents Giff and Marie Broderick. This family-run farm is known for its lush fields of hay, apple trees, tomatoes, blueberries, and asparagus.
A Warm Welcome to Split Rock Farm
As you arrive at Split Rock Farm, the serene landscape immediately sets a tone of tranquility. Rolling fields stretch out under a wide, blue sky, bordered by stone walls that have stood the test of time. The farm's charm is evident in every detail, from the barn to the carefully tended fields.
A Hayride Through History
The highlight of our visit? Definitely the hayride. It’s like a trip back in time. As the tractor fires up, we will jump onto a wagon piled high with sweet-smelling hay. The ride is a leisurely tour around the farm, offering panoramic views of the countryside and a close-up look at the fields where all the magic happens.
Giff and Marie will keep us entertained with stories about the farm’s history—tales of hard work, perseverance, and the joys of farming. We will hear about the care that goes into maintaining the apple orchard, growing tomatoes, the craft of cultivating blueberries, and the rhythms of harvesting asparagus.
A Stroll Through the Fields
After the hayride, we will take a stroll through the fields. It’s a feast for the senses, with the sights and smells of the farm all coming together. Whether you’re a gardening enthusiast or just someone who loves fresh, local produce, a visit to Split Rock Farm will give you a new appreciation for the art of farming.
Lunch at G. W. Tavern
After a morning of farm fun, we will head over to G. W. Tavern for a hearty lunch. This cozy spot, dating back to 1850, serves up American comfort food in a warm, rustic setting, complete with a patio and hearth. It’s the perfect place to unwind, and the menu—packed with New England flavors and locally sourced ingredients.
A Day to Remember
Visiting Split Rock Farm is more than just a fun day out—it’s a trip into the heart of Connecticut’s agricultural history. From the hayride that winds through the fields to the farm-fresh produce that tops your plate at G. W. Tavern, every moment is a celebration of the land and the people who care for it.
