Shadblow (Amelanchier spp.)

Shadblow is named for its masses of delicate white flowers blooming in early spring when the shad run up the rivers to spawn. It is widely planted for these blooms, its silvery gray bark and yellow-gold fall leaves. The small red fruits attract birds and gradually turn dark. There are a number of native species, hybrids and cultivars/varieties available ranging from tall bushy shrubs to multi-stemmed trees to single-trunk specimens. Shadblow is native throughout much of the eastern United States. It grows well in sun or partial shade, thrives in moist soils but does not tolerate dry conditions without watering. Zones 4-8.
