Redbud (Cercis canadensis)

Redbud blossoms make a welcome early spring show before most leaves start growing. The masses of small purplish-pink flowers nestle closely along the dark branches and trunk. During the summer Redbud displays its heart-shaped leaves in a rounded crown of spreading branches. The seed pods ripen in fall when the leaves turn yellow. Redbud is native to the southeastern and central United States from New Jersey southwards. While tolerant of sun or light shade and acid or alkaline soil, it cannot tolerate wet soil or extremely dry or hot locations. Best transplanted while young. Grows to about 35' height. Zones 5-8.
